Troop 30067 Earns Silver Award with Aldridge Gardens Projects

Girl Scout Troop 30067 members Hannah, Rileigh, Anne Kearney, Anna and Hannah, eighth graders at Pizitz Middle School, Reyna, eighth grader at Clay Chalkville Middle School and DeKiyah, eighth grader at Irondale Middle School, recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award for their project Garden of Imagination and Fort Campsite at Aldridge Gardens.

The girls were concerned that kids did not have safe areas to play, so they created a Garden of Imagination for girls and Fort Campsite for boys at Aldridge Gardens. They cleaned up an unused area by removing weeds and designating a path to the area. The girls also built forts, made signs, collected bins to store things in and built a pretend fire pit. Their focus was to show children how to have fun outdoors, use their imaginations and learn to keep the gardens clean.

The project taught the girls communication and leadership skills, as well as responsibility and teamwork.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. This award symbolizes a Girl Scout Cadette's accomplishments in Girl Scouting and community activities as she matures and works to better her life and the lives of others.

Berry Students Get to Know a Book for Bronze Award Project

Girl Scout Troop 128 members Sophie, Natalie and Madison, students at Berry Middle School, recently earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award for their project Get to Know a Book. The girls worked with their reading coach to decide how to help students at their school become better readers. The girls made a graph showing the parts of a book, and students will add their own examples to this graph throughout the year. The girls also made a timeline with Caldecott books for kindergarten through second graders, and Newberry books for third through fifth grades. They read each book and wrote summaries to interest students in reading the books.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Junior (fourth and fifth grades) can earn. This award recognizes that a Girl Scout Junior has gained the leadership and planning skills required to follow through with a project that makes a positive difference in her community.

Spain Park Students Earn Silver with Jag Walk Project

Regan and Madison, ninth graders at Spain Park High School and members of Girl Scout Troop 116, recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award for their project Jag Walk. The girls helped create a walking path around the school so that people can exercise and fight obesity. They made a PowerPoint presentation, brochure, painted the path, spoke to the PTO and raised awareness about the walking path at Berry Middle School’s registration. Doing this project taught the girls public speaking and leadership skills. Regan and Madison hope people will use the walking path to become happier and healthier.
