Community Library Earns Gold Award

Leah responded to a call for help in her community—the need for a community library. She worked with local businesses to get the necessary supplies. Lang’s Tropical Fish provided a temporary space for the library. The Glencoe Business Council donated a desk and two chairs and the Etowah County Commission donated a computer. And, a local sorority donated funds for shelves that Leah and her dad, Randy, built. Leah also organized local volunteers to run the library. Leah’s efforts resulted in over 3000 books donated from the Glencoe and Etowah County communities. The library was a success--over 35 patrons applied for library membership at the grand opening. But, Leah did have to learn how to deal with unforeseen circumstances as part of this project when she had to unexpectedly find a different location for the library. The Glencoe High School graduate now attends the University of Alabama and is the daughter of Debbie and Randy of Glencoe.
